In late spring horse lovers around the globe begin to think of horse shows and competitions, and of course, the coveted Triple Crown. The finest horses in the world will be in the spotlight for all of us to see. Certainly, the horses participating in these events are winners – just to be entered in either requires a horse of considerable caliber. We would like to take this opportunity to highlight how all horses are winners – in what they give to us, as pleasure mounts, broodmares, therapy horses, retired companions – in all the varied ways that they enrich our lives.

We invite you to submit a photo and a 250 word description that details what you feel makes your horse a “winner.” The cost of registering will be $25 per horse, which also includes a Special Horses “Winners” t-shirt created especially for this event!

It is then up to you to encourage friends and family (at $5 a vote, payable via PayPal on the site) to vote for your special horse. Each participant will have their own page and link to share via email, on Facebook, via Twitter, even in your local news! We will update vote totals nightly and the three horses with the greatest number of votes will win a “Win,” “Place,” or “Show” prize basket.

This boy has such beautiful movement! He is kind and so very personable!! He is at the top of scale in herd hierarchy, but not necessarily the alpha. At this time, it is not known whether or not he would be sound for trail riding. Currently, he does not exhibit any lameness at the walk, trot or canter. He is protective of his hock (an injury sustained while racing) and when he lays down to roll he will do so gingerly but he manages to jump up, run off, buck and snort once he has gotten a good roll in.

With Bold Ruler in his bloodlines, how can you pass this one up?

The Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge is a competition in which volunteer foster homes and professional trainers work with a Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society foster horse for three months (starting in early July 2010) and will show off at the Challenge at the 2009 Bluebonnet Horse Expo on October 16, 2010.

The Challenge is open to any BEHS member who applies to foster and is approved, as well as professional trainers whose property is inspected and approved. If you are not currently an approved foster home or BEHS member, you can join the rescue at www.bluebonnetequine.org/help/joinbehs.htm and download a fostering application at www.bluebonnetequine.org/help/foster.htm and we’ll get you set up to go.

The Bluebonnet Fostering Coordinator and the Challenge organizers will select a pool of eligible horses. Participants will apply to compete in the Challenge by June 15, 2010 and will be able to list their top three choices of a horse to work with. BEHS foster homes may compete with a foster already in their possession as long as no professional trainers have handled the horse in the six months preceding the Challenge Competition (held on October 16 at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo in Austin, Texas). If you wish to compete with a foster horse already in your possession, note that on your application.

The Challenge will include the following divisions:
• Professional trainer – anyone who is paid for their training services
• Experienced foster home – someone who has been a foster home for at least two years
• Novice foster home – someone who has fostered less than two years
• Youth – participants 17 and under as of January 1, 2009.

If a foster home chooses, he/she may pay training fees to a professional trainer for a Challenge-eligible horse. That horse and trainer will then compete in the professional trainer category.

The horses who participate in the Challenge will not be available for adoption until the end of the Challenge. All horses will go up for Adoption the day of the contest. Horses who are not broke to ride will be offered for adoption for $300. Horses who are broke to ride will be offered for adoption for $750. Pre-approved adopters may adopt and take home the horse after the Challenge. If more than one pre-approved adopter wishes to adopt the same horse, they may bid up the adoption fee and the highest bidder will adopt the horse. Adoption applications will also be accepted the day of the Challenge but those adopters will not be allowed to adopt until their property is inspected and approved.

If you are interested in participating in the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge, please email Jennifer at jenn@bluebonnetequine.org for an application.

PS. Only sound and healthy horses will be used in the Challenge. Additionally all participants must be approved as foster homes for BEHS and follow-up visits will be conducted to make sure the horses are doing well in their foster homes and with their training.

Please visit their website at www.bluebonnetequine.org.

Ginger is a five year old chestnut Arab/Welsh cross standing approximately 14.2. She stands quietly on crossties, is excellent for the farrier, and will allow you to do just about anything with her once you tell her what you want.

Although not broke under saddle yet she has been bridled (rubber snaffle) and a saddle (close contact) has been on her back with the girth slightly tightened. She excels at reading body language and could be a wonderful project pony for a child who enjoys teaching a horse tricks and having fun on the ground. She would be fabulous for Pony Club or endurance riding! From morning till night she is on the go looking for something to do, whether it be playing with the other horses or trying to roll rocks around with her nose.

Although she is a firecracker, if you put her feet and brain to work she calms right down and will try to figure out what you want out of her and she will do her best to get it right.

Ginger has great potential to be a wonderful pony whatever your discipline. Come spring if she is still with NEER she will be started under saddle training (H/J).

Sadly, one of Uncle Jimmy’s horses was grinched in the Chronicle of the Horse Forums Horse Treat Secret Santa. We volunteered to be a degrincher, and was assigned Uncle Jimmy. But what Uncle Jimmy had planned to do – since, after all, his horses are hardly lacking for treats! – was donate whatever was sent to him to a less fortunate horse – one at an equine rescue. And, knowing that the needs of rescue horses may be unique, he offered instead to donate a very generous check to one of the Special Horses Inc. participating groups! But how to choose when they are all deserving? The names went into a hat, and one name was fished out by Uncle Jimmy, which was Sunkissed Acres.

SO, A BIG THANK YOU TO UNCLE JIMMY!

The one phrase we hear more than any other is “I would love to help but I have no money”.

Let us share with you just how valuable you are with no cash whatsoever.

*Write a creative little certificate to your favorite rescue or an email with a committment.

*Take a day to email a few of the hundreds of equine suppliers to send outdated items, returns, promos, gift packs etc. to the rescue.

*The donation of a day or two a year in which to sit down and write thankyou letters and print them off for a rescue.

*A day or two a year that you can give to go and organize or clean a feed room.

*You can check out the internet and find the various groups and foundations who do donate to animal organizations. Take a rainy day to do this and then forward your information.

*Hold a yard sale with proceeds to go to your favorite rescue. It need not be at the holidays. These horses eat year round so send a promisary note for one to be held next year and then announce it.

*Hold a concession at a show you know you can work. Put out a donation can somewhere or a collection at work, any time of the year is good. Just make a committment.

*Have a candy dish at workand have people donate thir change in exchange for the goodies, and then every few months send the funds collected.

*Ask your local vet if you can put a donation can at their clinic for x amount of months and then print a flyer with it. What you can’t give, someone else might be able to.

You are all worth a lot more than you realize. You have more power than you can ever dream. So, short of cash, no problem. Giving of yourself is the greatest gift and seeing the returns from what some of these very simple ideas can bring, will amaze you.
